Issues and Updates

Downtown Corner Curb “Bulbs”
What’s up with those new bulbous curb extensions that the City is installing downtown and in some parts of midtown?  Did anyone consult the biking community?  These “improvements” now funnel on-road bikers on L St., Hillcrest Drive, and elsewhere from roadside safety (parking lane or what appears on Hillcrest to be a bike lane) right into the narrowed traffic lane.  Since the Muni has just assembled a committee of bike commuters to work on a bicycle commuting plan, how about consulting them?  (MGM, 9-15-07).

Municipality Non-Motorized Transportation Plan

Anchorage Pedestrian Plan
A 191-page draft plan is being considered by the Assembly as of early October 2007.  It includes a lengthy prioritized list of project needs, and, in addition to policies and goals, specific action items to achieve them.  The Muni finally recognizes in the Plan that “walking is a clean, healthy, and inexpensive mode of transportation that only recently has been considered a serious component of the modern transportation system.”

Anchorage Bicycle Commuting Plan

As of late summer 2007, the Municipality was just starting the process for developing this plan, planning a public open house/workshop in the fall and convening a small focus group of interested people to help plan the meeting and to provide information.  According to Muni Coordinator Lori Schanche, members of the focus group include Rose Austin, Kevin Doniere, Chris Himes, Steve Johnson, Erick Salado, Robert Shipley, John Seigle, Janice Tower, Jeff Yeaton, Dan Vermilyea, Willy van Hemert, and Greg from Speedway Cycles.
